Operations Manager/Administrative Support Position
Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender Historical Society

Half-time permanent position paying $16 to $17 per hour, depending on qualifications, plus benefits. Required hours include Tuesday through Friday 1 to 5. Some evening and weekend work is also required.

The GLBT Historical Society is a small San Francisco nonprofit organization that maintains one of the preeminent archives of GLBT materials in the world. It makes these materials available to researchers as well as mounting exhibits and pubic forums throughout the year. It is run by a small staff, a very active board of directors and many volunteers.  More information on the Society can be found at our website: www.glbthistory.org.

The Operations Manager plays an essential role in the functioning of the GLBT Historical Society:

  • Providing administrative support to the Executive Director.
  • Maintaining office systems including managing volunteers.
  • Serving as point of contact for both volunteers and the public.

The ideal candidate has:

  • Significant office or administrative support experience with good computer skills including strong familiarity with Microsoft office programs.
  • Experience working with volunteers, preferably managing volunteers. Experience working with volunteers at events as well as in office is ideal.
  • Proven ability to autonomously undertake multiple tasks successfully.
  • Familiarity with GLBT issues and comfort working with the gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual community.
  • Comfort interfacing with diverse volunteers and the public.
  • Familiarity with community-based organizations or non-profit organizations.
  • Experience in other software programs such as databases, graphic design, or the internet helpful, but not essential.

Public Policy Director

REPORTS TO: Deputy Executive Director

The Director will manage the Public Policy Department of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), the leading national education organization dedicated to ending bias and discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in K-12 schools. S/he will direct the work of GLSEN’s Public Policy team, overseeing the organization’s efforts to promote safe schools policies and legislation at the local, state and federal level. As a member of GLSEN’s management team, the Director is charged with developing and implementing organizational development initiatives to strengthen GLSEN’s ability to meet its strategic goals.

I. Build awareness of GLSEN’s issues among key education policy stakeholders

  • Advance GLSEN’s strategic partnerships and coalition-building on policy and legislative issues
  • Coordinate GLSEN’s participation in key education, LGBT issues, and civil and human rights coalitions
  • Serve as lead GLSEN representative on policy and legislative issues

II. Lead GLSEN’s public policy and legislative campaign efforts

  • Lead campaign planning and goal-setting processes
  • Coordinate deployment of organizational resources in support of campaign goals
  • Oversee development of public policy documents and training modules
  • Coordinate organizational support of and technical assistance to local, statewide and federal coalitions pursuing Safe Schools policy and legislative goals

III. Serve as a member of GLSEN’s management team and manage the Public Policy Department

  • Develop and manage Public Policy Department budgets
  • Supervise Public Policy staff (currently three)
  • Ensure departmental compliance with all HR and Operations policies
  • Oversee tracking of organizational lobbying expenditures
  • Participate in organizational strategic planning and contribute to periodic review and revision of organizational policy and practice

Skills:
GLSEN’s Public Policy Director must be able to manage a team based in GLSEN’s DC and New York offices working on local, state and federal initiatives, promoting their professional development while meeting the organization’s strategic goals.  S/he must be conversant with public policy and legislation and the processes by which they are made, including both direct lobbying and community mobilization strategies.   S/he must also possess effective communications skills as this position is the public face of the organization in Washington and also must be able to build relationships and coalitions with other key stakeholders in the education, civil rights, and LGBT arenas.

Requirements:

  • MA/MS or commensurate training in fields of Public Policy, Social Science, Law or related fields
  • Five years of management experience in a policy making or lobbying capacity
  • Excellent written and oral presentation skills
  • Exceptional organizational skills
  • Strong management skills and the ability to mentor and lead a team of professionals
  • Ability to create and serve on coalitions to support GLSEN’s Public Policy goals
  • Proven ability to work with, students, Chapter leaders and other volunteers in ways that empower them to achieve concrete legislative results
  • An understanding of, and passion for, the mission and goals of GLSEN

Position Title: LYRIC Program Coordinator (1 FTE)
Introduction

Founded in 1988, the Lavender Youth Recreation & Information Center (LYRIC) provides supports and services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQQ) youth, 24 years of age and under. LYRIC's mission is to build community and inspire positive social change with LGBTQQ youth, their families, and allies of all races, classes, genders, and abilities. LYRIC facilitates community building, education and economic development, health and wellness, and leadership development programming reaching over 1200 youth and outreaching to another 5000 annually. The organization has a current budget of approximately $1 million and 10 full-time and 2 part-time employees.
Position Summary
The Program Coordinator is one of three, supported by a program team that also includes a Program Director, two Case Managers and a part-time licensed therapist. Program Coordinators are responsible for designing and implementing innovative and relevant programming for LGBTQQ youth 24 years and under within four program areas: Community Building, Health & Wellness, Education and Economic Empowerment, and Youth Organizing. Program Coordinators may bring unique skills that favor focus in one program area over the others, however each Program Coordinator should bring skills and experience that will allow them to be successful working across all LYRIC program areas within a youth development and anti-oppression framework. The Program Coordinator reports to LYRIC's Program Director and is accountable to working in collaboration with all members of LYRIC's program staff, as well as working as part of the whole LYRIC staff team.

Salary
Salary Range: $29,000 - $35,000 (depending upon level of experience) per annum. Position includes full benefits package.


Position Title: LYRIC Case Manager (2 FTE) - Newly created positions

Two case managers are being hired to join a program team which currently includes a Program Director, 3 Program Coordinators and a part-time licensed therapist. To help ensure access to and success in LYRIC's youth development and leadership programming, youth participants need a range of supports. When accessing LYRIC services for the first time, each youth meets with a LYRIC program staff one-on-one for a program orientation and to assess interest and need. Case managers will be the primary staff members responsible for this initial meeting. Ongoing case management responsibilities will range from simple referrals on an as needed basis to intensive case management including development of an individualized service plan and ongoing individual sessions. Case managers will be part of a neighborhood engagement team that is currently being developed as part of the Community Partnership for LGBTQQ Youth. Critical to the success of this position, is mastery of case management provision both on a one-to-one basis as well as within a community context. The Case Manager reports to LYRIC's Program Director and is accountable to working in collaboration with all members of LYRIC's program staff, as well as working as part of the whole LYRIC staff team.

Salary
Salary Range: $33,000 - $35,000 per annum and commensurate with experience. Position includes full benefits package.
