2008 COHORT
Praney Anand – Praney is a graduate of Amity University in Jaipur, India in hospital and health management. His background is in the social issues related to public health and would like to focus or concentrate on the History of Human Sexuality and LGBT, specifically the societal pressures that prevent individuals from adopting a lifestyle of their own choice. He would also like to focus on methods of practicing safe sex and prevention of STDs/STIs.
Brianne Amato – Brianne is a graduate of Brown University with a double major in English, with a focus on Gender and Sexuality, and Psychology. She has a varied background in mental health, literature and education. While at SFSU she wants to explore the rehabilitation of a sexual self for those who have experienced sexual trauma, assault or violence. She is also passionate about the accurate dissemination of sexual education for all ages.
Justin Barron- Justin is a graduate of Wayne State University in Africana Studies. His undergraduate work dealt with finding ways to integrate concepts such as cultural construction of sexuality and sexual/gender identity systems with African Diaspora history. He would like to continue exploring the concepts, politics, and issues related to sexuality dealing with sex work decriminalization. He is currently a counselor at Progress Foundation in San Francisco.
Katie Barrilleaux – Katie is a graduate of Louisiana State University with a double major in Psychology and French. Her true passion lies helping individuals realize their fundamental right to possess their own bodies and express their full potential as human beings. She is primarily interested in GLBT studies working with adolescents and learning a holistic care approach to counseling.
Carly Bonnell – Carly is a graduate of UC San Diego in Critical Gender Studies with a minor in Sociology. Her interest lies in how sexual and gender development are facilitated and learned for children who are at various social and cultural institutions such as foster care systems or mental health practices. She is also interested in studying intersexuality. Carly is an Intake Coordinator at STAT, and a research assistant at Pacific Graduate School of Pyschology.
Katherine Brazas – Katherine is a UC Santa Cruz graduate in Community Studies. She is interested in how the sexualities of youth are constructed, regulated and politicized specifically, what effect various forms of sex education have on the youth who receive it and the impact it has on the communities they live in. Tate was an intern for the Illinois Caucus for Adolescent Health, a non profit that “promotes a positive approach to adolescent sexual health and the comprehensive support of young parents.”
Walter Campbell – Walter is a graduate of UC Santa Cruz in Sociology. He is interested in how sexual identities are created in “alternative” subcultures. He wants to investigate simplistic moralisms against convoluted politics of marginalization and corporeality to explore constructions of sexualized (as well as racialized and gendered) deviance. He proposes to research the satanic subculture and how satanic sexual identities are negotiated.
Jennifer Cavaliero – Jennifer is a graduate of CSU Fullerton in Business Administration. Her focus is on the profound disconnect between what young adults should know about sexuality – STD’s, biology, romance and sexual behavior – and actual sexuality education in our public schools. She would also like to develop a career in adult sex education.
Betsy Dorsett – Betsy is a graduate
of University of North Carolina, Asheville in Sociology and a minor in
health care management. She is interested in researching the ways in which
cultures control and manage bodies through sexuality specifically in gerontology.
She wishes to engage in research that deconstructs the cultural norms
surrounding sexuality and questions the hegemony of who is, and who is
not, allowed on society’s sexual landscape. She is a full
time employee at American Society for Aging
(ASA)
Jessica Fischer – Jessica is an SFSU graduate in Sociology with minor in Human Sexuality Studies. She intends to study gender disparities of sexual information dissemination. Overall, her objective is to innovate the ways that sexuality is discussed and taught by understanding how different groups discuss sex and then tailoring programs to their unique communication patterns. Jessica was a sexuality educator volunteer at Holden High School in the East Bay.
Richard
Garcia – Richard is a graduate of Florida International
University in Miami with dual degrees in Psychology and Women's Studies.
His research interests are in the areas of transgender and intersex constructions
of sexual and gender identity, sexual scripts in the LGBT community, and
the relationships between race, gender and sexuality in drag performances.
His focus is on social activism and awareness around issues in minority
sexual health, education and trans-rights.
Stephanie Kanna – Stephanie is a graduate of Washington State University – Vancouver with B.S. in Psychology and later a B.A. in History. Her goal is to become a sexuality educator. She wants the opportunity to have a positive impact on others through education and making an impact on a society that is both ashamed and obsessed with sexuality.
Douglas
Mawhinney – Douglas is a graduate of UC Santa Barbara with
a B.A. in English and a Minor in Psychology. He also completed 2 and one
half years of post-baccalaureate studies in Biology and Psychology at
San Diego Mesa College. This last year he worked as an intern in an Evolutionary/Developmental
Biology laboratory at CSU Sacramento, while also supervising a group home
for Juvenile Sex Offenders. His main interest is the study of sexualized
forms of aggression, and he intends to pursue a PhD in Behavioral Neuroscience.
Jack
Mohr - Jack Mohr is a graduate of San Francisco State University
in Anthropology with a minor in Human Sexuality Studies. He is interested
in studying the contrast between static concepts of sexual identity and
more fluid forms, including polyamory and pansexuality. He is also interested
in the application of political economy and Marxist theory to conflicts
around sexual identity.
Julia Sinclair-Palm – Julia is a graduate of California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo. Her major is Psychology and a minor in Women’s Studies. She is interested in exploring increasingly diverse terms in which youth are sexually identifying and the exploring the intersections of ethnicity, sexuality, gender and class. Ultimately, she hopes to formulate a new model of care for LGTBQ youth.
Gabriel Solorio – Gabriel is a graduate of UCLA in Anthropology. He would like to investigate how straight identified men who are not “in the closet” in certain urban American areas such LA and New York City are able to engage in same se sexual practices and be able to reconcile such seemingly inconsistent and non normative behaviors that would appear to pose a direct challenge to their claiming of straight identity.
Marik Xavier-Brier – Marik is a graduate of Georgia State University in Sociology with a concentration in Sexuality and Gender. He would like to focus on the cross –cultural analysis of sexuality and desire. He is interested in exploring the intersections of social theory, society, linguistics and politics. He is also interested in the construction of fetishes and fetishisms and formulation of sexual subcultures. He is the center coordinator for YouthPride.
