Professor Gilbert Herdt

Gilbert Herdt, PhD, a cultural and psychological anthropologist, is founding Professor of Human Sexuality Studies and Chair of the Department of Sexuality Studies at San Francisco State.  He has been since 2002 Founder/Director of the National Sexuality Resource Center, which advances sexual literacy for all Americans (funded by the Ford Foundation). Herdt was on the faculty previously at Stanford University and the University of Chicago, and has lectured at the University of Amsterdam, where he founded the first Summer Institute on Sexuality and Society for graduate students from around the world. Dr. Herdt has been a Fulbright, NIMH, and Guggenheim, and Rockefeller Fellow, and has served in many organizational and founding national and international roles with private, Federal and state, and international agencies, including WHO. He is an international expert on sexuality and gender known for his fieldwork and film on the Sambia of Papua New Guinea over a period of 19 years, and has also studied adolescents and their families intensively in Chicago, resulting in a series of more than 35 single authored and edited books and 100 articles and chapters, notably, Guardians of the Flutes, now in its 3rd edition.  He was the founding faculty sponsor of the lesbian and gay student’s organization at Stanford University and the co-chair of the Provost committee that created the first partner benefits policy for a US university at the University of Chicago. He founded the NIH funded Center on Culture and Mental Health at the University of Chicago and co-founded the Evelyn Hooker Center for Gay and Lesbian Mental Health at the University of Chicago. Herdt served as the Organizer of the 5th Conference of the International conference on Sexual Rights and Moral Panics, in San Francisco in June 2005. He is co-founder and first president of the International Association for the Study of Sexuality, Society, and Culture (an organization dedicated to the scholarly and historic study of sexuality), and has organized many international conferences in sexuality, gender, HIV/AIDS, and sexual theory, including the first global conference on AIDS and anthropology. Herdt is the founding editor of Sexuality Research and Social Policy (the journal of the NSRC), and since 1994 has been the general editor of a series of books at the University of Chicago Press. His latest book is entitled Moral Panics, Sex Panics: The Fight for Sexual Rights (NYU Press). He teaches graduate students and lives in San Francisco with his partner, Niels, and dog Zephyr.
