Professor Brian Devries



Brian de Vries is a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America; he is a founding member and former chair of the Interest Group on Death, Dying, Bereavement and Widowhood and a founding member of both the Interest Group on Reminiscence and Life Review as well as the Interest Group on LGBT aging issues. Dr. de Vries is Associate Editor of The International Journal of Aging and Human Development and has guest-edited two other journals. Dr. de Vries has edited four books: Kinship Bereavement in Later Life (Baywood Publishing, 1998); End of Life Issues: Interdisciplinary and Multidimensional Perspectives (Springer Publishing, 1999); Narrative Gerontology: Theory, Research, and Practice (co-edited with G. Kenyon and P. Clark, Springer Publishing, 2001) and Gay and Lesbian Aging: Research and Future Directions (co-edited with G. Herdt, Springer, 2004). Additionally, Dr. de Vries has authored or co-authored 60 journal manuscripts and book chapters and other reports on topics such as narrative concepts in later life including life review, social relationships in later life, and end of life issues including bereavement. With colleagues at the University of Utah, Dr. de Vries was recently awarded a 2.5 million dollar grant from the National Institute on Aging to support an innovative intervention study with recently bereaved older spouses.
